Barrel Horse Training

I can evaluate a prospect, pattern your barrel horse, or mentor you in training your own horse. Just let me know your needs.

Before starting a horse on barrels, I want to see a good foundation on that horse. The horse should be suited in conformation, temperament and mind for this strenuous discipline. To be a successful barrel horse, the horse must have all of this, plus the invisible key to winning..."heart", the desire to run and perform the task to the best of his/her ability.

I successfully trained my own horses and competed in barrel racing associations and local rodeos for 20 years. I had the honor of meeting Gail Shanahan, who passed along training tips to me as we rode together. Before her untimely death, she expressed to me her interest in learning the natural horsemanship approach. I believe Gail wouId have become a great proponent of natural horsemanship had she been able to fulfill her dream. Sharon Camarillo, Wanda Bush, Lynn McKenzie and other talented yet less well known trainers have also been my mentors.

Please know I do not train futurity colts. I believe in letting a horse mature, keeping their bodies and minds sound throughout their lives. I will start a horse at 4, but not ask for a run until age 5 or later, depending on the individual. You can likely find plenty of trainers who will train a futurity horse for you if that's what you desire. If you want a horse to be your partner for years, I'll be happy to help you down that road.
